William Tunnell, father of the subject of this sketch, was born in France in the first decade of the eighteenth century—it is believed in the year 1703. He was the oldest child of his parents, and the only one born in France. The parents of William Tunnell were stout Calvinists, godly people. Removing to Yorkshire, England, when William was an infant, the family soon became thoroughly Anglicized. The religious faith of the family was pronouncedly, pugnaciously Calvinistic. He died August 1814. Their son Stephen was a Methodist, born 1753. Stephen moved to Washington Co., TN in 1789. He had nine sons and one daughter. Their son Robert Tunnell moved to North Carolina.

I read you blog with most interest. Anne Howard and William Tunnell are my 6th great-grandparents. The Howard line has always been an interest as well since I have 2 Howard lines in my genealogy. May I ask how you found all this great information connecting Ann Howard back to England and it's royal roots?
I've loved reading your blog and have to say WOW - lots of info!! Lady Ann and William are my ancesters. I am a Tunnell, working on the family tree... reading back about the Howard family was very interesting!! Thank you for shariing!
Thank you for a great read! I am a Harris, from the original Herries/Heriz line going back to Captain Thomas Harris of VA [settling from England].
I am currently using ancestry.com to insert all family tree information that my father researched years ago. While doing so, I have tried to search for additional information to extend the 'branches' as far as possible. Parts of my father's records were destroyed and I am currently searching for information beyond the marriage of James Howard and Nancy Ball, who descends from the Tunnell/Howard family; leading me to your post. :)
Thanks again!
Very interested in how you are connect to William (Tonnelier)Tunnel and Lady Ann Howard...
They are my 7th g-grandparents. My line comes down through their daughter Elizabeth who m. George Ball; their son Robert Ball m. Sarah Wilson; their daughter Cassie m. Tolbert Huff.
I have a picture of Cassie Ball Huff (my 3g-grandmother).
I've also had my autosomal DNA done and it is showing Jewish - which I've found came from my 2 Hugeunot lines... one of which is the Tonnelier or TUNNEL line and the other comes in from George Ball's mother's line of Brashear or Brassieur.
I've spoken with a lady who has researched the Jewish connection with the Hugeunots and she assures me that both of my lines - Tonnelier//Tunnel and Brashear//Brassieur are well known Jewish lines...
Would love to correspond or compare notes with anyone - my home email is:

Anne Howard and William Tunnell are my 7th great-grandparents. I'm descended through their son Stephen Tunnell, Sr.
I am presently working to enlarge the family tree I've built on Ancestry.com and would absolutely love to share information. I can be reached at aradia_songbird @ hotmail.com (remove the spaces, of course :) )
This information was extremely helpful! Thank you!!!
I am directly related to Ann and William Tunnel through their eldest son Rev. William Tunnel. Lady Anne and Guillaume Tunnel are my 6th great grandparents. I wish I had more information about them - how they met, why Lady Anne was born in England unlike her father, Henry Howard, born in Virginia. Why was her mother in England? Absolutely fascinating line and stories, but I wish we had more.
Lady Anne Howard is the daughter of Henry Howard And Elizabeth Moss 1710 (d.1814) in Yorkshire England, her family home is Castle Howard, which is still in the Howard Family, of British aristocracy going back to Edward I, King of England 1239-1307. (Henry Howard was not born in Virginia, as you were asking, for more info start with House of Howard, Wikipedia. Lady Anne Howard moved to the new American Colonies 1731, after marrying Guillaume de Tonnelier) for an exhaustive study of the Tonnelier, changed to Tunnell, lineage in America, reference the genealogy documented in the third volume of Notable Southern Families published 1926 Zella Armstrong. Maybe we are related.
Note: please check out Castle Howard. It's fascinating.
Note: I also saw a published reference that Lord Henry Howard, father of Lady Anne Howard was born in Fairfax County, Virginia. This is incorrect. He was British aristocracy through and through with numerous titles and of course ties to royalty. His daughter Anne married Guillaume Tonnelier, who came to England from France and story has it, that he was employed by the Howard family as a French teacher to the females of the household, which was common practice in these grand families. It is said by some that Lady Anne Howard fell in love with Guillaume which was forbidden, but they married, giving up her life of bountiful privileges of her family to start a new life as a regular person, in the new American Colonies.
