John Lilly and Dorothy Wade

John Lilly was born about 1640 in York Co., VA as the first child of John Lilly and MaryMargaret Maulson. He died about 1677 in Charles City, York Co., VA. When he was 27, He married Dorothy Wade,daughter of Arminger Wade and Dorothy Maulson, about 1667 in Point Comfort, York Co.,VA.

John Lilly was buried in Gloucester, VA.

John Lilly and Dorothy Wade had the following children:

1.John Lilly was born on 03 Aug 1669 in VA. He died between 1733–1771 in Gloucester, VA. He married Dorothy Billups between 1684–1760 in Gloucester Cty., Virginia.

  [Lilly2.FTW]     There is a Will for Arminger Wade proved 4-24-1677 and recorded in York Co.,VA that names John and Dorothy in it.

THE LIILY FAMILY (THE SOUHTERN BRANCH) The Lillys of America are descended form Sirs Robert and John DeLisle of the castle of Lille, in Normandy, France. They came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066, and for their valuable service the monarch gave them much land and other property. Their descendents settled in various parts of the British Isles, branches becoming known as DeLisle, Lisle, Lsle, Lylly, Lyllie, Lillie, Lilley, and Lilly. The ancestor of the American Southern branch of Lilly's was John Lilly, the immigrant who came to America in 1633, with Leonard Calvert, a brother of Lord Baltimore.John Lilly, the immigrant, settled in Charles River County, Virginia. He was appointed one of the "viewers of tobacco", by Act of Assembly, in 1639, an important position at that time, as tobacco was a medium of exchange.  In 1642, Charles River County was abolished and its territory became a part of York County, Virginia.  On June 20, of that year, John (Lylly) Lilly and wife secured a land grant of 350 acres situated on Milford Haven Creek, York County. Milford haven was in that portion of York County which became  Gloucester county in 1651, and Mathews county in 1790. According to the "records of colonial Gloucester county, Virginia", compiled by Mrs. Polly Cary Mason, the " Roxbury" lands now in Matthews county, Virginia, are a part of  the original grant to John Lilly in 1642, and inherited by his descendents.Evidently John Lilly, the immigrant, died soon after 1642, as his widow, Mary Lilly, married Edmund Chisman prior to 1646. The statement is confirmed by a court record of York county which states that Edmund Chisman was stepfather to John Lilly, orphan.John Lilly, the orphan, married Dorothy Wade, a daughter of Arminger Wade. The will of Arminger Wade was proved April 24, 1677, and recorded in York County, Virginia. His will names sons: Arminger Wade, John Hay, and John Lilly; daughters, Dorothy Lilly, and Mary (deceased), and grandchild, Anne Wade. The records show that John Lilly and wife, Dorothy Wade Lilly, were the parents of two children: Mary and John. Mary Lilly married Robert Reade of York County. John Lilly married a Miss Billups and settled in Gloucester County, Virginia. The given name of his wife is not known, as the early records of Gloucester County have been destroyed. But some of the Gloucester County records have been found in other counties, and are now in two volumes known as the "Records of the Colonial Gloucester County, Virginia" compiled by Mrs. Polly Cary Mason. The volumes contain the records of the Lilly’s and the Billups families in Mathews County, formerly a part of Gloucester County. In the "Records of the Colonial Gloucester" is a will of Richard Billups, proved February 27, 1752. He names William and Dorothy Lilly, son and daughter of John Lilly, among the legatees to his personal estate.

"Scotch Tom" was born Feb 20, 1677; died Oct 7, 1748; came to Virginia about 1700; he married, first, Margaret Reade. She was daughter of Robert Reade and Mary Lilly, who was daughter of John Lilly and granddaughter of John Lilly and his wife Dorothy Wade (daughter of Arminger Wade and his wife, the heiress of Edward Moulson of York County, Va);

Edward Chisman, of 1623, was probably Edmund Chisman. I have found his name undoubtedly written that way several times. Thomas, of 1623, was probably another brother of Col. John, but probably died without issue, as I have seen no reference to his descendants.
Edmund was justice in 1652, and resided in Pocosin (or Poquosin) parish on Chisman's creek. Will proved Feb. 4, 1678, and mentions son Thomas, daughters Mary Curtis and Jane Chisman, and wife, Mary. He omits mention of his son, Edmund Jr. In 1646, Edmund Chisman was father-in-law of John Lilly. Perhaps Mary was his mother. She died Dec. 11, 1678. Edmund, junior, married Lydia, aged 29, in 1678, "daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Bushrod," wife of Mr. Thomas Bushrod., who by his deposition was 53 in 1657. Lydia was niece of Capt. Farlow, one of Oliver Cromwell's soldiers, an expert mathmatician and subsequently one of Bacon's supporters in Virginia, for which Gov. Berkeley hanged him. Bushrod married, 1st, Mary, widow of Capt. Thomas Hill of "Essex Lodge," Washington's headquarters in 1781 at the siege of Yorktown, and originally patented by Capt. William Brocas of the Council.
Edmund Chisman, jr., qualified as justice July 25, 1670, and in Bacon's Rebellion was made a major. After Bacon's death he was captured by Robert Beverley in York River. When he was arraigned before Berkeley, and was asked "why he had engaged in Bacon's designs," his brave young wife took all the blame on herself and besought the Governor  "to hang her and pardon him." The Governor retorted with an indecent reproach, but Chisman cheated the gallows by dying in prison "of feare, of griefe or bad usage."
It is possible that religion had something to do with the rebellion of Chisman. In 1659, the Colony had been much excited by the new sect of Quakers. The Court of York, on Sept.  10, 1659, ordered the sheriff and his deputies to prevent all private and other meetings of "the turbulent people called Quakers." But the order was so futile that the Court, on the 29th of October following, complained that the Quakers met in York County oftener than anywhere else.
(5) In January, 1693--4, Robert Reade and Mary, his wife, conveyed lands (for the benefit of their eldest son, John) descending to said Mary Reade as daughter of Mr. John Lilly, who married the heiress of Edward Mason, a cooper, and in 1600 aged 60, his wife Margaret being 57 then. Y.R.C.
"John Lilly, the son of John Lilly of Milford Haven (Gloucester Co.) by D*** his wife, was baptized Aug. 3d, 1669." Pocosin Parish Reg.
Armiger Wade's will pr. April 24, 1677. Mentions sons, John Hay, John Lilly and Armiger Wade; daughters, Mary Hay deced and Dorothy Lilly, and grandchild Anne Wade Y.R.C.

The original Billups homestead is just outside of Mathews in Mathews County, Virginia. The land is adjacent to land owned by the Lilly family. This Lilly land was known and is shown on a local map as "Lilly's Neck" There is a Mrs. Billups who, as of October 2000, was living on the Billups property. The original house is there although I did not see the interior. Mathews County is just across a body of water from York County, VA. My husband descends from Dorothy BILLUPS & John LILLY> Dorothy was a daughter of Richard BILLUPS. The Billups were ship builders in the Mathews area.They were in the area in 1636.
