Elijah Stover Mary Scarberry

Elijah Stover was born about 1789 in VA, son of Jacob Stover and Sarah McGhee. Elijah died in Gallia Co., OH 08 Oct 1824.

He married before 1812, Mary Scarberry, daughter of Isaac and Mary Ward Scarberry. She was born Between 1788-1799 and died 21 Jun 1843 in Gallia Co., OH.
Hardesty's History of Gallia Co., OH 1882 page 23 says that Elijah was the father of Jacob Stover and that he went to Gallia Co "1819, when it was a wilderness, overrun with wild beasts, when they had to grind their corn by hand; they threshed their wheat with a flail, and a sheet, with a person at each end, constituted a fanning mill; they had to go three miles to school, which was supported bysubscription; what preaching they had was conducted at private houses; the first sermon Mr. Stover heard was preached by theRev. Mr. Strait. Mr. Stover'sfather died 10-8-1824, and his mother Mary(Scarberry) Stover, 6-21-1843."

Elijah was born about 1790 in Virginia. He married Mary Scarberry and moved
to Lawrence County. Ohio. They were in the 1819 tax list in Gallia
County, Ohio. They lived on a farm located on Rocky Fork just outside
Gallipolis. Elijah died on October 8, 1824 and was buried in the Stover
Cemetery on the hill behind the log cabin. Mary died June 21, 1843 and
was buried next to her husband. The family Bible, with the family rentals.
is now in the possession of Mrs. Robert L. Caldwell in Gallipolis, Ohio.
It is believed that Elijah moved to the area with the German settlement.
Stover comes from the name. "Stauffer," which is German. A Henry Stauffer
b. about 1730 in Germany. moved his family to Pennsylvania. They later
moved down into the Valley of Virginia. then across the mountains to Ohio.

Seven children were listed for Elijah and Mary (Scarberry) Stover.
1. Sally' Stover b. 7 March 1813. d. 3 Sept. 1864, m. George Criner
b. 1805. and had Clara who m. kevi Ward; and Preston who m. Surilda
Caroline Stover.

2. Rachel Stover b. 7 March 1813, was a twin to Sally.

3. Cynthia Stover b. 18 June 1815, m. Lewis Carter in 1841.

4. Juble (Jublee) Stover b. 11 Oct. 1817. m. 22 March 1842,
Mary Jane Doughty b. 22 July' 1825, dau. of John Doughty who
made boats for the War of 1812. They had Surilda.

5. Susanna Stover b. 27 Dec. 1819.

6. Clarissa (Clarinda) Stover m. Richard Harbour and had:
Thomas: Elizabeth: George; Nancy; Mary: Malinda S.; Clarinda:
and William. Richard and Clarinda lived in Crown City', Gallia County,
Ohio.

7. Malinda Stover b. 3 Aug. 1822. was a twin to Clarinda.

Note: This is the same Elijah Stover that was in the 1815 Giles Co, VA
Tax List, which later became Raleigh Co, WV. It is beleived that he is the
son of Jacob Stover and Sallie McGhee, proginators of the Raleigh Co Stovers

Clarissa Stover’s twin sister Malinda Stover married my great great grandfather Walter Grissom in Galia, Ohio July 23, 1846
