Rachel Stover and Augustus Harless

Rachel Stover, daughter of Jubel Stover and Mary J. Doughty, was born 18 Jul 1852 in Saundersville,OH and died 17 Feb 1905 in Lincoln Co., WV. She married 4 September 1870 Gallia Co., OH Augustus Harless. He was born 28 August 1845 in Marion, Lawrence Co., OH and died 9 March 1925 in Lincoln Co. WV. He was the son of Jacob and Elsy Emmons Harless.

I have a copy of Gallia County Marriages volume 3325 and it lists marriage date as 9-4-1871. Jubal Stovers will lists Rachel Stover as daughter and Augustus Harless as son in law in application for probate.

1880 census of Gallia Co.,OH lists Rachel , wife, Mary, Jubal, Elzina, Viola, Lewis, and one other I can't read.
After Rachel's death, Augustus married Margaret Jane Hayes Hesson. She was widowed also. They married 9-30- 1905. There are Ohio land deeds for several tracts of land in Gallia Co that Augustus and Rachel owned and they owned land in Mason County, Wv around 16 Mile Creek, between Winfield and Pt. Pleasant, WV.

They moved to Lincoln Co., WV just after 1900. Their property there was at Kings Creek, Donnaly Hollow. Augustus reportedly had a grocery store and a post office that he ran for several years. Their daughter Ruby and her husband Harrison Turley moved back from Putnam County to take care of Augusutus in his old age. Ruby and Harrison bought the farm and later sold it to her brother Lewis. He sold it to a family named Statford. I did not find evidence that Augustus was a post master but I did find that his son Wilbert was apponted Post Master at Caldona, Lincoln Co, 4-9-1915.

Augustus was the first I could find in our family to be a Church of Christ minister. He wrote poetry and hymns and was reportedly published several times, but I haven't been able to find where yet.

Augustus died of Tuberculosis. Buried
in the Harless Cemetery at King's Creek (There is no longer a
place called King's Creek in Lincoln Co., but there is a
cemetery in Lincoln Co. where many Harlesses are buried. It is
in the town called Griffithsville on a country road called
Sugartree. The Church of Christ is also located there, but
information has not yet been received to verify that this was
the Harless cemetery where Augustus was buried)

OTHER SOURCES SAY HE WAS A MINISTER AT THE CHURCH OF CHRIST AT CANCEL GAP ON KINGS CREEK.
