The original Billups homestead is just outside of Mathews in Mathews County, Virginia. The land is adjacent to land owned by the Lilly family. This Lilly land was known and is shown on a local map as "Lilly's Neck" There is a Mrs. Billups who, as of October 2000, was living on the Billups property. The original house is there although I did not see the interior. Mathews County is just across a body of water from York County, VA. My husband descends from Dorothy BILLUPS & John LILLY> Dorothy was a daughter of Richard BILLUPS. The Billups were ship builders in the Mathews area. They were in the area in 1636.

THE LIILY FAMILY (THE SOUHTERN BRANCH) The Lillys of America are descended form Sirs Robert and John DeLisle of the castle of Lille, in Normandy, France. They came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066, and for their valuable service the monarch gave them much land and other property. Their descendents settled in various parts of the British Isles, branches becoming known as DeLisle, Lisle, Lsle, Lylly, Lyllie, Lillie, Lilley, and Lilly. The ancestor of the American Southern branch of Lilly's was John Lilly, the immigrant who came to America in 1633, with Leonard Calvert, a brother of Lord Baltimore.John Lilly, the immigrant, settled in Charles River County, Virginia. He was appointed one of the "viewers of tobacco", by Act of Assembly, in 1639, an important position at that time, as tobacco was a medium of exchange.  In 1642, Charles River County was abolished and its territory became a part of York County, Virginia.  On June 20, of that year, John (Lylly) Lilly and wife secured a land grant of 350 acres situated on Milford Haven Creek, York County. Milford haven was in that portion of York County which became  Gloucester county in 1651, and Mathews county in 1790. According to the "records of colonial Gloucester county, Virginia", compiled by Mrs. Polly Cary Mason, the " Roxbury" lands now in Matthews county, Virginia, are a part of  the original grant to John Lilly in 1642, and inherited by his descendents.Evidently John Lilly, the immigrant, died soon after 1642, as his widow, Mary Lilly, married Edmund Chisman prior to 1646. The statement is confirmed by a court record of York county which states that Edmund Chisman was stepfather to John Lilly, orphan.John Lilly, the orphan, married Dorothy Wade, a daughter of Arminger Wade. The will of Arminger Wade was proved April 24, 1677, and recorded in York County, Virginia. His will names sons: Arminger Wade, John Hay, and John Lilly; daughters, Dorothy Lilly, and Mary (deceased), and grandchild, Anne Wade. The records show that John Lilly and wife, Dorothy Wade Lilly, were the parents of two children: Mary and John. Mary Lilly married Robert Reade of York County. John Lilly married a Miss Billups and settled in Gloucester County, Virginia. The given name of his wife is not known, as the early records of Gloucester County have been destroyed. But some of the Gloucester County records have been found in other counties, and are now in two volumes known as the "Records of the Colonial Gloucester County, Virginia" compiled by Mrs. Polly Cary Mason. The volumes contain the records of the Lilly’s and the Billups families in Mathews County, formerly a part of Gloucester County. In the "Records of the Colonial Gloucester" is a will of Richard Billups, proved February 27, 1752. He names William and Dorothy Lilly, son and daughter of John Lilly, among the legatees to his personal estate.
